Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
